“How much gas do we have?” Ted asked, rubbing his aching jaw as they drove down the long, winding country road. “Are we gonna make it back?”

“There’s a decent amount in the tank,” John answered, “but this thing is a gas guzzler. We’re getting terrible mileage. It’s hard to say whether we’ll make to my place. If we’re lucky, we’ll get there with a few drops to spare. But even if we don’t, we should get close enough that it’ll be easy enough to walk the rest of the way, as long as we don’t run into any major trouble on the road. Given what’s happened to the world, though, there’s no guarantee that this is going to be a smooth journey.”

John let out a long, slow sigh. His system was still charged with adrenalin, even though the fight with the mobsters was half an hour ago. The whole thing felt incredibly surreal, as if it had happened in some half-remembered nightmare rather than in reality. He couldn’t believe he had shot three men. Of course, he knew the shootings had been fully justified and that Ted would have been dead if he hadn’t shot the mobsters, but even so, it was difficult to come to terms with. And even worse, he knew those three would likely not be the last people he would have to shoot in this terrible new world they had found themselves in.

“Hey,” Ted said, his eyes widening with alarm. “You got shot, man! Shit, are you okay?”

“It’s a flesh wound. It’s nothing,” John said, shrugging off the injury. “I’ll clean it up with my first aid kit when it’s safe to stop. Actually, I think we’re good to pull over for a couple of minutes. Those cars I sabotaged aren’t going anywhere, and even if those goons know how to ride horses, they’d have to have had the animals at full gallop for the past half hour to be anywhere near us.”

After checking all around him and making sure there was nobody nearby—which was very unlikely anyway, given that they were in the middle of nowhere—John picked a spot and pulled off the road. He killed the headlights but kept the motor running.

“You need some light?” Ted asked.

“Yeah, please,” John answered.

Ted got out his Zippo and conjured a small, steady flame, which bathed the inside of the vehicle in a gentle orange glow. “Are you sure that’s only a flesh wound?” he asked, staring at the dark trail of blood that had run down John’s left forearm.

“I’m sure,” John answered, examining the spot on his arm where the mobster’s bullet had taken a nick out of his flesh. He cleaned up the wound with some disinfectant from his first-aid kit, then put a dressing on it. “I’ll be absolutely fine,” he said. “How are you feeling?”

“I’ve got a few aches and pains,” Ted said, gingerly rubbing his swollen jaw, “but nothing life-threatening. That one big guy, man, he had a fist like a sledgehammer. My ribs and my jaw are gonna be black and blue tomorrow.
